Taking the concept of 'national recognition', Elliat drew on two well-renowned and celebrated symbols of achievement; the AFL and ASHES trophies. Contemporary and traditional imagery of regional Australia were embedded into the trophies which were formed by the layering of laser-cut stainless steel sheets. The thirteen recipients for the two categories of the award; the Sustained Contribution and the Youth Award all provided positive feedback upon receiving them. The commissioned artworks created a buzz around them during the conference. An Innovation Patent is for "The owner of any new and useful invention that involves an innovative step..." ipaustralia.gov.au Whilst not a full-blown-all-protective patent, the Innovation Patent is the first step to owning the copyright to a design in the eyes of the establishment. With The Lichen to feature on the ABC's New Inventors program in early 2008, it was important to acquire some kind of ownership over the idea. For other designers who have discovered an 'innovative step' patents can be applied for, relatively stress free, from IP Australia's site.
