In July 2008 Elliat Rich won the tender to produce 'artworks' for the inaugural Regional Arts Australia Volunteer Awards. The awards were established to rewards and provide volunteers national recognition for their contribution towards the arts across regional, rural and remote Australia. The awards were presented at a dinner held at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station as part of the national art at the heart conference during the first week in October 2008.
Taking the concept of 'national recognition', Elliat drew on two well-renowned and celebrated symbols of achievement; the AFL and ASHES trophies. Contemporary and traditional imagery of regional Australia were embedded into the trophies which were formed by the layering of laser-cut stainless steel sheets.
The thirteen recipients for the two categories of the award; the Sustained Contribution and the Youth Award all provided positive feedback upon receiving them. The commissioned artworks created a buzz around them during the conference.
