The Lichen takes home the trophy on the ABC's New Inventors

20/02/08

On the 13th of February The Lichen went head-to-head against two other inventions on the ABC's New Inventors program. The popular TV show is now in it's fifth series and showcases innovators and their inventions from across the country. Producers from the show first saw The Lichen at the Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery award. A few months later with a bit of foundation and a new pair of boots, The Lichen was presented in front of a studio audience and a judging panel. The other inventions on the night were the 'Hinton Swing' an attachable golfing aid to help you perfect your swing and the 'SaltMaster' an addition to a tractor that in one pass digs a trench, lays a pipe, fills around it with aggregate

and then covers it all over again, all in the name of helping to fight salinity. After a snappy five minutes of deliberation the judges were asked to pick the nights' episode winner. Chris Russell, the first judge, for it's versatility and potential for mass-market selected the Lichen, judge number two, Professor Veena Sahajwalla thought the SaltMaster for it's effeciency deserved to win, and with a slight tension in the air the final judge, Alison Page said she was "Lichen the Lichen too".
The New Inventors trophy now sits in the trophy cabinet where it contends for attention with the Bombay Sapphire - Dinosaur Design'ed - trophy and the three shiny camel cup awards.
